Jamaican-Born Style & Beauty Bloggers: Afayah Prendergast

This month, as a tribute to my island nation, I wanted to introduce you to a few of our Jamaican-born style and beauty bloggers who are making waves in the online fashion community.

Afayah Prendergast of BeautyJamaica is from St. Andrew, Jamaica. She launched her blog March of 2011. I discovered her blog after receiving a referral from another Jamaican blogger. I loved her body confidence and style and have been following her blog since. She lives in Jamaica and her style is a great inspiration for women who live in the tropics or who is looking for style inspiration this summer.

Where have you been featured/awards?

Previously, I have been featured on local fashion blog, Kingston Belle and on UK hair and beauty blog, Woman in the Jungle. I’ve also been featured on Those Girls Are Wild YouTube channel during their shameless promotion series.

What inspired you to start your blog?

It was a little over a year since I had completed university and I was trying to “find myself” so to speak. Not yet acclimated to the real world, I decided that I needed a hobby that could facilitate self discovery. I had always been interested in fashion for years and I was eager to teach myself about it and share with my friends. I also began to delve in hair and skin care. The blog seemed like the best outlet for me.

How would you describe your style?
My style is still under construction. I’ve always been very experimental and because of that I’m yet to settle on one thing. But I can say that so far I’ve come to be a fan of classic looks, clean lines and simplicity. Recently, I’ve been leaning towards bold looks or statement pieces. I want to strike the balance between comfort and fearlessness. I want to be able to wear just about anything and still shine through.

What three tips would you give to women who are trying to find their own personal style?
1. Don’t force yourself to like something just because it’s on trend. Not everything fits every personality or body type. Put yourself first.
2. Think outside the box. If you think what’s out there is boring, then make it your own. Try some DIY projects or enlist the help of a tailor to customize or bring your looks to life.
3. Be confident. Nothing kills a great outfit like lack luster confidence. If you aren’t comfortable in what you’re wearing it will show.

What is your beauty routine?
In the mornings I wash and moisturize my face. If I’m going to spend the day outdoors I’ll add sunscreen to my moisturizer which already has spf. I’m a lover of natural looking makeup so I like to keep it light. Whenever I want to look dressed up without thinking about it too much, I wear red lipstick (no matter if I’m going to the supermarket or the movies). At the end of each day, I remove any makeup with wipes. I also wash my face before bed. Every few weeks I make use of a pore strip or give myself a facial.

Three items every woman should have in their closet?
I think all women should have a flattering pair of blue jeans; a little black dress; and a sturdy but beautiful pair of sandals.

    • Hi Neti. I am glad you are enjoying this series. It’s my way of promoting fellow Jamaicans, especially Jamaican women who I believe are extraordinary, just by their willingness to put themselves out there and who I also view as great role models and inspiration to other women.

  3. Her photography is awesome. I have to check out this fellow Jamaican blogger!
