Oh lord, yeah I am pretty much late for everything. But in this case, I would rather be late than never.
So today’s blog post will give you a little more insight into who I am and my writing process. I was invited to participate by Carrie Vibert a fellow Connecticut blogger/social media expert/digital editor/food enthusiast/and all around great person. Carrie blogs over at Poet In The Pantry.
Let me get some other formalities out of the way… So each week of the My Writing Process Blog Tour, a new batch of bloggers answers the same four questions. Then they pick 3 more bloggers to feature, who will, in turn, provide their answers to the same four questions the following week. Ummmm, yeah I am going to have to see which 3 bloggers I can hit up to continue this series. In any case, here are the four questions and my answers:
1) What am I working on?
Hmmm, right now what I am working on is this post which I was supposed to work on this weekend and publish today, June 30th. I even took my laptop on the road this weekend because I realized that getting work done in my home has been impossible of lately. I also have a TON of product reviews that I will be publishing soon. These are items that were sent to me for review and items that I have purchased with my own money for the sake of sharing my thoughts and opinions with you. I’ve also been jetting back and forth to New York City to learn makeup application which is a series that will be coming to the blog really soon. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve converted my blog to a lifestyle vs a style and beauty blog. There is so much more to me than what I wear and needed that to be reflected on my blog.
2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?
As far as style I am a lot older than most of the bloggers. My style posts are so rare now in comparison to a lot of other bloggers who also write about style and who want you to know that they look fabulous EVERYDAY. Let’s face it the outfit of the day thing is for 20 somethings and I am now 41. When I do feature fashion, I also tend to feature styles and items that are geared towards women in my age group. I am also not big on name brands, etc (I honestly can’t afford them). So its a lot of discount chains, Marshalls and sale items from popular stores like Zara and Macys.
As far as beauty, a lot of this is new to me (especially makeup). I can’t at this time present myself as some kind of expert and I think a lot of women who are also discovering these things at this late stage in their life really identify with my “new to this” approach. As far as lifestyle, I have not traveled extensively so most of these posts tend to be Connecticut focused. I think these things are why my blog is a little different from others.
3) Why do I write what I do?
I took an SEO class shortly after launching my blog. I was taught how to research trends using google webmaster tools. Whatever was trending was what I was supposed to write about so that it would drive traffic to my site. This blog would have probably evolved into a legitimate side hustle if I had taken that advice but I really prefer to write about things that I am passionate about, not what is popular or trending.
4) How does your writing process work?
Process? I tend to work on things that have deadlines first. If it has a deadline, its more than likely a sponsored post and I try to be as professional as possible, without losing my voice when I draft those. I tend to work on essay type posts like this one last minute. When I am writing essays, or anything that is from a first person account I pretend that I am writing an email to my older sister or best friend. This method helps my true voice and style to come out in my writing. Then there are those times when I am completely clueless about what to blog about and this is the time I refer to my little notebook of ideas that I keep with me at all times. Because I’ve fallen so far behind on my posts, yesterday, I took my laptop with me to New York City sat in a Starbucks for four hours and pumped out 3 drafts of posts that I will be publishing this week. This is going to become part of my writing process, but utilizing the Starbucks here in Connecticut. Yes, it was crowded and noisy, but it’s not like I had a bed to curl up into, TV to watch or cat to sit on my keyboard to prevent me from doing what I needed to do.
Well, that’s a little bit more about me. I think I am going to hit up Donna from DiscountThief, Bonnie from HomePlace Blog and Erin from Accidentally Stylish to see if they would like to participate. These three women all have very fantastic and unique blogs and styles.
Thank for reading and a big thanks again to Carrie Vibert for selecting me to participate in this tour.
