Sometimes a change of scenery, even for one night is all that is needed to recharge us and to get us back on the right track. This is one of the reasons why I jumped at the opportunity to spend a night at the fabulous, Courtyard by Marriott, Stamford Downtown after accepting an invitation from owners, Urgo Hotels.
The boutique-styled hotel is located in the heart of downtown Stamford, 30 miles outside of Manhattan. The refurbished lobby welcomes visitors with floor-to-ceiling windows; and wood accented and curvaceous contemporary furnishings in their RBar lounge.
Amenities includes: free WiFi, flat-screen TV’s, desks, mini-refrigerators and coffee makers. Guests also have the option to select rooms that include whirlpool tubs and/or balconies. There is also a restaurant in the lobby area, swimming pool, exercise room, and guest laundry room on the lower floor.
The hotel is clean and very well maintained! My jaw honestly and literally dropped when I walked in and saw the size of the king sized corner suite on the ninth-floor. My suite had a separate living area, which included a pull-out sofa and a microwave and picture windows that provided views of downtown Stamford and beyond.
The Courtyard Marriott Downtown Stamford is a 2-minute walk from the University of Connecticut’s Stamford campus. Free car service is available for the five minute ride to the Metro North station or nearby mall. The hotel is also right across the street from the Burlington Coat factory and a block from Target for anyone who needs a quick affordable outfit or toiletries.
There are 90 restaurants within walking distance, but we dined at Napa & Co which is conveniently located in the lobby of the hotel. Napa & Co, was first opened in 2006 and quickly became a favorite in Stamford. All of the food is farm to plate and their wine selection has been recognized and honored by various publications and organizations around the country. We were seated in the main dining room, which had high vaulted-ceilings and a very impressive floor to ceiling display of their selection of wine. There is a small dining room which can be used for a private party or dinner meeting.
I had the Fennel Dusted Roasted Salmon; and he had the Slow Roasted Halibut. This is not a budget travelers restaurant but the food was delicious and expertly prepared and is so worth every dime. We detected a french accent from our waiter and found out after asking that he was from the french speaking side of Belgium. Along with the wine, candle light, great food and atmosphere, the french accent was an extra touch and made us feel like we were in a far away place, not an hour and a half from our homes and everyday lives. Service was really great by the way and I am really looking forward to returning to try their 7-course dinners that they serve during the Stamford restaurant week.
Nearby entertainment venues include: a movie theater, the Palace Theater and night clubs. We were curious about the nightlife and after dinner, we took a stroll down the side streets to see what Stamford had to offer. We stopped in at the Fez where we took in some north African rock and then stopped in a night club where we danced to the reggae set until we were exhausted.
I think the busy intersection near the hotel would make it a bit of a challenge for families but this is definitely a great hotel for couples and business travelers. I cannot wait to return for another weekend. Check out their beach package which is available May 24th through September 1, 2015.
